About the Art

Fraktur Heart Crow Hill Art is a unique blend of original art and personalized sentiments. Every piece we sell is a perfect replica of a hand painted original and because it's personalized, it is also completely one-of-a-kind.

The style of art is called Fraktur. In the most literal sense, "Fraktur" means "fractured writing," an ornate type of written or printed German that is similar to Gothic lettering in English.

Fraktur cat In the early days of our nation, commemorative announcements for births, baptisms, marriages and deaths were often written in Fraktur. Scribes would decorate the announcements with primitive drawings of angels, flowers, soldiers, houses, birds, hearts and animals. The resulting Early American primitive art was often framed to become the centerpieces of a family's history and home decor.

As you browse through the site you'll see that we keep the folk art tradition and offer dozens of designs for various commemorative events, like births, weddings, and anniversaries, plus a variety of decorative items that allow you to couple your own personality with the brilliance of Crow Hill Art. To make it easier for you, we've organized our products by occasion, sentiment, or recipient. There are literally hundreds of products to choose from and our collection is constantly growing.

The History of Crow Hill Art

Thirty-five years ago, one of the founders of Crow Hill Art began experimenting with the Fraktur style to use as the basis for memorializing, through art, various commemorative events in contemporary lives. Each Fraktur was hand drawn on "antiqued" paper. Creating each Fraktur was a costly and time-consuming process.

Contemporary Process As time passed, the cost of producing even the most basic of Fraktur drawings rose until none could be produced for less than $300 each. Selling the Frakturs through galleries and other limited sources of distribution raised the retail price to more than $600. Today, the cost would be much greater. And so, the creation and sale of personalized Frakturs remained a cottage industry, only sold through word-of-mouth and repeat business.

A year ago, we began experimenting with new forms of printing where images from original art could be digitally merged with personalized information to recreate the essence of the hand drawn Fraktur at a small fraction of its original cost. We are now able to produce individually personalized Fraktur commemoratives at an affordable price. The quality of the new Frakturs is virtually identical to the original art. Is it original art? Yes. It is simply not the original art.

Crow Hill Art is high quality digital reproductions of these hand-made Frakturs. Each original piece of art is offered as a personalized product, so each piece is truly unique. Products in the Crow Hill Art gallery must consist of four key ingredients:

Unsurpassed originality: All work is original and created by Crow Hill Art's resident artist, co-founder and inspiration, Lori Durocher. Everything you find at Crow Hill Art is an original design created in her New England studio.

Premium personalization: You, the user, have ultimate control over the end product. Personalized products are unique, and when given as gifts, show the recipient how much you care.

Emotional connection: All the offerings in the Crow Hill Art collection have been designed not only as art, but also as emotional pieces that stand the test of time. Commemoratives like birth and marriage announcements or anniversary poems, will be remembered forever.
